august 2024 books

I can’t believe we’re winding down on summer reads! I feel like I still have so many to get through. But I loved what I read this month. So many great books.

I shared my giant summer reading list a few months ago – you can find it here.

Let me know what you’re reading below.

I do have a book of the month membership – I love it so much. That’s where I got a few books from this month. I get so many of my new releases and debut author books there. You can sign up for one here.

Most of these books are linked through bookshop (if available!) and I highly suggest shopping through there because it will support your local indie bookstore. You can choose the local bookstore to support! I support Penguin Books when I buy which is my fave here in Pittsburgh.

WHAT I READ IN AUGUST 2024

Not Another Love Song – 4.5 stars

Loved this one! So I was hesitant at first because this author can write some DARK characters. In her previous book, the guy was just so dark. This guy starts out like that but it gets a lot better. The story follows two people who are musicians and play in the manhattan pops. I loved this storyline so much – the author is extremely detailed in the musical world and it was fascinating!

The God Of The Woods – 5 stars

Loved the one so so so much! Ooooh it is perfect for a misty summer day. This story is about a camp set in the 70s, run by a wealthy family. A camper goes missing who happens to be from the family, and a decade earlier another child from the same family had gone missing. This is very good and does have some twists – I saw a few coming but in the best way possible. I loved how this ended even if it was a little heartbreaking!

So This Is War – 3.5 stars

I love a good Meghan Quinn book when I was to numb my mind, and I mean that in a good way! They are all fairly similar and the characters all play off each other. In this one we follow one of the hockey players who ends up living with the coach’s daughter as a favor to him. The premise is kind of ridiculous but it was a quick read and one that moves quickly. I did like the characters!

The Pairing – 4.5 stars

Ahhhh this was so so good. We follow Theo and Kit who are exs and had an awful breakup. They were supposed to take an amazing trip that never happened, so years later (once they are out of each other’s lives), they both decide to take the trip… at the same time! I live for a good second chance romance and this one does not disappoint. The descriptions of the vacation are INCREDIBLE and made me feel like I was there.

The Housemaid – 4 stars

I finally read this!! Both of my SIL’s have been raving about her books. Oh my gosh, this was like a drug. It was such a quick and enticing read. Very fast to read and suspenseful! We meet an ex con who is hired to be a maid for a woman who ends up bonkers crazy. Tons of big twists. I saw a few coming but only because I’ve read similar books – if you have too, you will get what I mean. This books moves quick and I read it in less than 24 hours. Already onto the next ones! I love that they are a mystery/thriller but not scary.

The Rom Commers – 4.5 stars

I love Katherine Center’s books SO much. They are the perfect rom com to me – which is funny considering the title of this one! Here, we follow two screenwriters (a famous one and one who is hustling to make it happen) and they end up working on a project together. Super cute, funny, love the writing and the characters. I love that she can write cynical characters without them coming off as dark or mean.

I’m still in the midst of some of my best summer reads! I feel like I lost a week of reading on vacation (hence why this post is so late) – doesn’t seem to make sense unless you know what it’s like to take kids on vacation, haha. But I still got some great ones in. A few favorites of the whole summer!

I shared my giant summer reading list a few months ago – you can find it here.

Let me know what you’re reading below.

I do have a book of the month membership – I love it so much. That’s where I got a few books from this month. I get so many of my new releases and debut author books there. You can sign up for one here.

WHAT I READ IN JULY 2024

Jackpot Summer – 4 stars

This was tied as my favorite read of the month! It was so cute. The story is about four siblings who enter the powerball lottery and they become overnight millionaires. The family drama and dynamics in this story is out of this world – if you have multiple siblings I think it is a must read. The ending is so, so good. Also so interesting about lottery winners and the stereotypes that we’ve always heard of. Such a good summer read!

The Summer Pact – 3 stars

I always love an Emily Giffin read. This story follows four college friends and then tragedy strikes senior year, and they make a pact to always be there for each other. A decade later they are traveling together after one reaches out during a hard time in her life. This felt a little all over the place for me and while I did like it, it was also a little slow at times. It also seemed sort of unrealistic!!

A Novel Summer – 4 stars

Love Jamie Brenner’s books!! I love that they usually take place in Provincetown and this is no different. We follow an author, Shelby, who has hurt her friends in the town with her bestselling book. She is working on her next book and finds herself helping a friend in their (adorable!) bookshop. Here, she ends up righting some of the wrongs. And of course we have love!! Such a great ending and heart warming story. Jamie does Provincetown like Elin does Nantucket!

The Ex Vows – 5 stars

Oh my gosh – LOVED this. From the opening, I was instantly hooked. I love a lifelong romance story. We follow Eli and Georgia who broke up years ago, but now must reunite for the wedding of their best friend. There is drama surrounding the wedding and the two of them have to work together to make the day perfect. I absolutely loved this story. Second chance romances have my heart. I loved this author’s first book too!

One Perfect Couple – 4.5 stars

I needed to throw a thriller in there!! I love Ruth Ware books. The story follows Lyla and Nico who join a reality dating show. They are on a remote island, there is all sorts of drama, storms and they are cut off from the rest of the world. I COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN!!! Maybe it’s because we’re in the time of reality dating shows but it was so good and I was in such suspense. I couldn’t wait to see what happens next. I loved the twists and even though some of the people are so unlikeable, it’s such a good read. A great summer one!

Here’s everything I read in this first month of summer! Lots of great ones.

I shared my giant summer reading list a few weeks ago – you can find it here!

Let me know what you’re reading below!

WHAT I READ IN JUNE 2024

Swan Song – 5 stars

I can’t! I can’t believe I’m already talking about Elin’s final summer novel. I obviously loved it. We’re following the police chief (who has a role in a few other novels, but this is a stand alone book) who is seconds away from retiring when drama strikes on the island! It’s true, classic Elin and such a good read. Also, the ending. I wanted to bawl my eyes out! Now that I’ve read it, I think I might listen to the audio version too.

Summer Romance – 5 stars

I LOVE the first few books of this author and I couldn’t wait to read this. It didn’t disappoint!! Huge huge fan and I loved it. I love that her books usually have slightly older (read: 30s, haha) female characters. This story is no different and follows Ali who is recently divorced and meets a guy in the park when her dog pees on him. This was such a heart warming, cute, loving story and I loved Ethan as a character so much.

A Happier Life – 4 stars

Oh how I loved this one too! Again, another book I was majorly looking forward to. This is sort of historical fiction as it’s told in dual timelines of present day and 1976. We follow Keaton who decides to get her grandparents’ house ready for sale, but there is some mystery involved in their lives. This is so heartwarming and sweet and I just loved it! Also how dreamy is the name Sunset Lane? I want to live there.

The Paris Novel – 4.5 stars

Another great one. I adored the premise of this. The story is about Stella and when her mother dies, the only inheritance she has is a plane ticket to Paris. She ends up going and having such an amazing adventure. As expected, the food description is out of this world and I could practically taste it. This was such a good escape for me and I loved the vivid imagery and descriptions. Highly recommend!!

The Midnight Feast – 4.5 stars

I was highly anticipating this book as well. It did not disappoint! It may be my favorite of her books?! The story is about a murder at a resort on the summer solstice and there are SO MANY TWISTS!!! I couldn’t put it down and was in suspense the entire time. This is also told in dual timelines with many characters. But it’s done so well and it isn’t confusing. The ending is so good.

The Next Mrs Parrish – 3.5 stars

Ugh, I am unsure how I feel about this. So I didn’t love the first book because the characters are just SO terrible, but when I saw that this was coming out, I couldn’t stop thinking about it! I had to know what happened. You definitely need to read the first book before this. This story continues to follow those characters – Amber and her marriage to Jackson, Daphne and it does get a little twisty but nothing crazy. The characters are so unlikeable and I hate hate hate the storylines having to do with the kids.

In my opinion, this is the best reading month of the entire year! So many of my favorite authors released books in the last few weeks. I can’t get to them fast enough!

I shared my giant summer reading list a few weeks ago – you can find it here!

WHAT I READ IN MAY 2024

The Paradise Problem – 4.75 stars

Ah, such a fabulous one. I loved this book so much. The story follows Anna, who we meet five years after she married a guy for family housing in school. It was a business arrangement, but they never officially divorced. And now he is back and is asking her to play the part of his fake wife. I love a fake dating/marriage trope so I thought it was great! Funny too. Anna is such a fun, unique, quirky character and I loved her. And Liam so much.

This Summer Will Be Different – 5 stars

Okay, I loved this just about as much as Every Summer After. Oh my gosh – it’s the ultimate delicious summer book. The story follows Lucy and Felix – Felix is Lucy’s best friend’s brother. They accidentally meet BEFORE she knows he is her BFF’s brother and we follow their situationship for a few years. This was so great and I was curious the whole time what Bridget’s issue with her fiance was! Loved the ending, loved the characters.

How To End a Love Story – 5 stars

Loved this one!! It had me hooked instantly. I love a second chance romance/reconnection and this is just that. Helen and Grant reconnect on a work project after a many many years when a tragic event occurred. The story is heart breaking but SO good and the chemistry is incredible. Loved ALL the characters in this.

Happy Medium – 3.5 stars

Man, I wanted to love this one so much. This is the author who wrote Mrs Nash’s Ashes which I adored. This was just a like for me though. The story follows Gretchen who is a fake spiritual medium and intends on helping an “old man” – who ends up being young and gorgeous. I don’t usually love ghost stories so I went in not expecting much. The ghost is funny and friendly, the story is cute but it was just a little outlandish for me.

The Guncle Abroad – 4 stars

I loved The Guncle and this almost felt like I was watching the second season of a series! I want them to make this into a show/movie. Definitely read the first book first. This second one follows the kids and their uncle, their father and what is happening five years after the first book. I still think I loved the first book a little more, but this is super cute!

Ready or Not – 3.75 stars

This was one of my book of the month picks a few months ago. I really liked it! This story follows Eve who has a one night stand and finds herself pregnant. It’s another story where we find the main character in a situation with her friend’s brother, haha! Super cute and I really liked the ending.

The Rumor – 5 stars, forever

I re-read this novel of Elin’s in anticipation for the release of Swan Song this month!! This was one of two of her books that she suggested rereading and man, I loved the revisit. This is definitely one of my favorites of hers!

The best time of the reading year is here!!!!

I started reading a few of my very favorite authors new books. I’m also trying to figure out if I can reread all of Elin’s books before her final novel this June! Might be quite the stretch, haha. Maybe I read a few and listen to the rest all day? We shall see!

Let me know what you’re reading below!

WHAT I READ IN APRIL 2024

Just For The Summer – 5 stars

Oh my gosh, just loved this one. I love everything by Abby Jimenez that I read. The story follows a man and woman who try to break their “curse” – the curse of every person they break up with finding their soulmate right after their relationship. They figure if they date each other, it will break the curse. This is so fun and cute, I absolutely love Abby’s writing, how much depth her characters have and how her stories are light and easy but still have real meaning.

Funny Story – 4.75 stars

Another major fave!! Emily Henry could write anything and I’d automatically purchase it. This story follows a man and woman who have significant others that leave them for each other. There is forced proximity and fake dating, two tropes I love. It’s such a great read and classic Emily Henry – the writing and the banter is unmatched! Beach Read and Book Lovers are still my top two of hers, but this has moved right behind them.

A Fire So Wild – 2.5 stars

This was a book of the month pick for me. I wanted to love it but found myself struggling through it. The story is about a California community that is torn apart by wildfires. I’ve seen everywhere that people thought it was similar to Little Fires Everywhere – and it was! But almost in the way that I kept comparing it, and I loved Little Fires Everywhere so much.

A Long Time Coming – 3.5 stars

I love reading a Meghan Quinn book at night during the week to turn my brain off. I don’t mean that in a negative way – they are easy and light to read and the fun storyline, funny characters and inevitable conflict right before the end always suck me in. This one follows a man and woman who are best friends – he is essentially her man of honor once she is engaged. Of course, they may be falling in love too. It’s cute!

Those Three Little Words – 3 stars

This one took me a bit longer to get through. I actually liked the story and the characters but the main girl – oh man, she was a little nutty. The story follows a one night stand between a girl and her brother’s best friend. She gets pregnant and the story goes from there. Her outlandish pregnancy hormones were a little funny but also a little exaggerated. Still made for a quick, fun read.

Sylvia’s Second Act – 4 stars

I got this in my book of the month box too and it was super cute. The story follows a woman who finds her husband of almost 50 years having an affair with someone in their Florida retirement community. It jolts her into realizing she wants out, so she and her best friend move to NYC. It’s hilarious and adorable and endearing. So happy and light hearted.

We’re getting to the most wonderful time of the book year – all the fun new releases!! I read so many good ones this month!

Let me know what you read down below.

I do have a book of the month membership – I love it so much. That’s where I got Bye Baby from this month. I get so many of my new releases and debut author books there. You can sign up for one here.

WHAT I READ IN MARCH 2024

Expiration Dates – 4.5 stars

This was my favorite of the month!! It was SO GOOD. The story follows a girl who receives a piece of paper (from the universe? I guess.) as soon as (or shortly after) she starts dating someone, and this piece of paper gives her a timeline of how long they will be together. I saw the ending coming and I hoped that it was the ending. I just loved this story so much, however I do wish some of the loose ends were tied up – like how and why did she receive these notes?! Super good though and I was hooked instantly.

The Reason I Married Him – 3.5 stars

I love to read a good Meghan Quinn book at night – it’s fun, light and fluffy and puts me in a relaxed state of mind. I didn’t feel this way when I first started reading them, so they’ve grown on me! This story follows a girl who accepts a proposal from an acquaintance because she wants the land he owns. In turn, he receives something if he is the first married grandchild. It was a good read, one I couldn’t put down, and I love how so many of her books are tied together. They don’t have to be read in order, but many of them have the same characters in them!

A Love Song For Ricki Wilde – 5 stars

Oh my gosh – LOVED this one. It was such a lovely surprise, I didn’t see what was coming. This story follows a girl who leaves her family (and family business) to move to New York. Her family kind of gives off Kardashian vibes in a way, and she is the youngest. The story is told in past and present day and there are lots of twists and turns! If you’re into the whole idea of fate, I think you will love it. The connection and relationships are so good and the epilogue!! Eeeeep!!

Recipe For A Charmed Life – 3.5 stars

This was so super cute. It follows a chef who has a dream to own a restaurant in Paris. But she loses her talent and has a series of disasters one night, which ends up leading her to visit her estranged mother. This place is charming and I just adored it – plus she ends up in a situation with the resident oyster farmer who is a big grump. Loved the ending of this, the relationships and the characters. It was an fun read and while it wasn’t a major page turner for me, I really enjoyed it!

Bye, Baby – 3 stars

I knew going into this one that it was risky. I don’t like reading any thrillers that involve kids, especially babies, and if you read the summary, you’ll know what that means. This story follows two friends – basically a toxic friendship – and their differences in their lives now along with their upbringings. One is tragic, one is more of an escape. There is also an influencer aspect to this book which was fun (and infuriating) to read about. There were parts that went slow for me but also a good majority where I just couldn’t stop reading. It is “scary,” and I did end up ultimately liking it, even though most of the characters were unlikeable.

WHAT I READ IN FEBRUARY 2024

Maybe Once Maybe Twice – 5 stars

Oh my gosh. THIS BOOK!!! It will probably be one of my favorites of the entire year. This is everything I want in a romance novel. The story follows a girl who, at two different points in her life, made that cute promise of “if we’re not married by the age of 35, let’s get married” – to two different guys. I ended up loving both guys and just had NO IDEA what was going to happen. Even when I thought it was over, it wasn’t! This is such a good one.

The Women – 5 stars

Another fab one. I have been reading Kristin Hannah for over 20 years – long before she started writing historical fiction. Some of her early romance novels are my life long favorites. With that being said, this book is absolutely heart breaking but wonderful but real. The story follows a woman (and friends) who decide to join the Army Nurse Corps and head to the Vietnam war. But it’s also so much about after that. As usually happens with her books, I was an emotional basketcase! So wonderful and heart wrenching.

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store – 4 stars

This was my mom’s book club pick in January and I knew I had to read it! She kept talking to me about it, so it’s been on my list. I knew it wouldn’t my usual light hearted read so I stuck it between two romances. This story follows a town in Pennsylvania and is sort of a murder mystery – a skeleton is found and the story is transported to the 1920s/30s. It’s a time when the town was split between the Black community and Jewish immigrants, and the town comes together to save a young boy. Heartbreaking and wonderful. Such a good story!!

Come & Get It – 4 stars

I LOVED Kylie Reid’s first novel and was so excited about this one!! The story follows Millie, an RA at a university, who gets involved with a professor and some students in a sticky situation. The character development in this book is insane – there are so many layers! There are also some funny bits too. Definitely took me back to dorm life in college some too.

The Improbable Meet-Cute collection

I also read four of these amazon short stories that came out in January!! I was SO excited about these. They are super fast reads (like I read them in 1 to 2 hours each) and just little novellas. So I can’t write a big review, but added some notes below!

Worst Wingman Ever – 4 stars

A story involving note passing, but also a lot of depth. So heart warming.

The Exception to the Rule – 4 stars

My favorite – basically an entire book done in emails! Super cute.

Rosie and the Dreamboat – 4 stars

Such a cute and funny story about a girl trapped in a spa relaxation tank.

Drop, Cover and Hold On  – 3.5 stars

Another cute one that involves and earthquake and being trapped in a bakery. Forced proximity!

I kicked 2024 off with a lot of good books! I’m in a good reading zone at the moment and have some that I loved this month. What are you reading?1

You can find my reading lists here and previous what I read posts here.

And you can follow me on goodreads here.

I do have a book of the month membership – I love it so much. I get so many of my new releases and debut author books there. You can sign up for one here.

All of these books are linked through bookshop (if available!) and I highly suggest shopping through there because it will support your local indie bookstore. You can choose the local bookstore to support! I support Penguin Books when I buy which is my fave here in Pittsburgh.

WHAT I READ IN JANUARY 2024

Mercury – 5 stars

I love this book so much – it surprised me. It is a story about family, mostly about family drama. It follows a girl who moves to a new town with her single mom and becomes involved with a family that has three sons. This is not a happy story, but it is a good story. The writing is incredible and it kept me interested – I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen. It’s also sort of a murder mystery so I guess it could be considered a thriller. And! It’s set in western PA in the 90s, so I was familiar with what the author was talking about.

First Lie Wins – 4.75 stars

Also loved this one! This is a true thriller. The story follows a girl who is sort of a life long con artist to the point where she has made it her job. She always has an alias with a full background story. Her boyfriend is the target she is working on, but someone shows up with her REAL name and her real life story. It’s crazy! There were a few twists and turns and while I did see the big twist somewhat coming, it was still good.

The Bright Spot – 4 stars

This one was so cute! I love every book by Jill Shalvis. This was adorable – the story follows a girl who runs a farm, the owner dies and leaves her 50% of the farm – and someone else, a very cute someone else, the other 50%. If you are an animal lover, you will love this. Multiple times I laughed out loud and the farm animals had a ton of personality in this – the writing was great. It’s a super feel good story.

He’s Not My Type – 3 stars

I have to be in a certain moon to read Meghan Quinn – they are definitely a level of spice that may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I like reading them after a thriller or something deeper! This story is a hockey romance, which I love since we are huge hockey fans. The story follows a marketing exec for a hockey team who ends up living with one of the players after she loses her apartment in a breakup. Steamy, cute and I liked it.

A Not So Meet Cute – 3.5 stars

Same as the above, but I did like this one a little more. It was very funny and the banter is great. Equally as steamy and spicy, but still readable. This story follows a girl who gets fired from her job by her lifelong frenemy. She goes in search of a rich boyfriend and runs into someone who needs a fake fiance for a business deal. Sounds cheesy, but it’s very cute. I love a fake dating trope!

Frigid – 2 stars

I was not really a fan of this one – should’ve know by the cover alone, lol. It felt a little young adult-ish to me, so many of the scenes are cringy and I didn’t love the language. This story follows a girl who has been in love with her best friend forever. He’s a total player but they end up stranded in a cabin in a snowstorm. But it’s probably just me!! I know that people really love this. It is friends to lovers trope which is always a good one.

One In A Millennial

I’ve listened to Kate Kennedy’s podcast for years and she has an uncanny ability to verbalize nearly everything I loved/feel about growing up as a kid in the 90s. Think all the good nostalgia – this is the book, but in a fabulous way that also talks about how it has affected us. It’s really great! I listened to it because she narrates it. Her writing style is just like her podcasts so I highly suggest listening, that way you get the full effect!

Sharing all the books for my winter 2024 reading list today! I am so excited about all of these – having a list of books to go through for the season is super helpful and gives me something to look forward to. You can find a little bit of everything here!

My favorite kind of reading post! I get so ridiculously excited about a good book list.

I live to curl up on the couch and read an entire book. Those days are rare now – most times it’s me staying up half the night to get in my favorite reading time. The kindle oasis has also changed my life because I can read in the school car pool line, etc. I take it everywhere! And these lists mean that I have options right in front of me to choose from. I’ve been sharing what I read every month and of course, you can find all of my reading lists right here.

What’s on your list to read this season?

P.S. all of the links below go to bookshop.org, which supports your local indie bookstores. Please shop there when you can! I am an affiliate and do receive a small percentage of your purchase.

WHAT I READ IN DECEMBER 2023

The Plight Before Christmas – 4.5 stars

I loved this one so much! This was a great holiday read, but isn’t all Christmas-y so you could totally read it now! This story follows a girl who comes home for the holidays to her family cabin. Once she is there, her brother shows up with his coworker who had no where to go for the holiday season – and this person used to be the love of her life. Super cute and I really enjoyed all these characters. I didn’t think I liked the main character at first, but I ended up really loving her. And everyone else.

The Christmas Fix  – 3.5 stars

Another cute Christmasy read! This is like Christmas romance meets HGTV for a town. This story is about a small town that was wrecked in a hurricane. They have the chance to get it fixed up to be the ultimate Christmas town, but the man is charge is uninterested. Again it’s super cute and festive and very Hallmark-y – with a lot more spice than Hallmark, of course.

Same Time Next Year – 3 stars

This was a cute quick little read. It’s a novella, so it’s light and easy and it’s typical Tessa Bailey which = lots of spice. As long as I know that going in, I’m good! This story is about a girl working at a bar who enters a relationship with a hockey player, faking a marriage so he can stay in the US. It’s easy and quick! I read it on New Year’s Eve as my final book of the year.

A Winter In New York – 4 stars

I absolutely love this author, even if all of her books make me cry. This is such an NYC-love fest so if you love NYC like I do, you’ll love it. This story follows a girl who has a secret gelato recipe, but it’s not just HER secret recipe. There is some romance and drama here and she ends up falling for the owner of a gelato shop when she moves to NYC. It is so insightful and definitely emotional. And good!

The Last Love Note – 5 stars

Oh my gosh. This is another sort of sad but so lovable book! This is so emotional and deals with the loss of a spouse. The author’s note at the end is heartbreaking. A widow ends up stuck with her boss on a trip and he is the most wonderful character ever. There’s a little twist in here and while predictable, I still loved it. I love this book so much, even if it had me in tears multiple times.

The Second Chance Year – 4 stars

This was another one of my book of the month books! Super cute, especially for the holiday season. But you can read this any time of year! The story follows a girl who wants to redo her entire year – and she gets the chance to do that, but not before something big happens RIGHT BEFORE the year switches back. Eeeep! This was a good one, a quick read for me and I couldn’t wait to see what happened.
