Salted Honeycrisp Fritters.
I never wanted an apple fritter until I made salted apple fritters!
Because say it with me: honeycrisp season is the best season.
I mean whyyyy are these apple babes so good?
Here’s the thing. To me, honeycrisps taste like caramel apples without the caramel. That probably makes zero sense. But I think it’s a nostalgia thing. Honeycrisps would be made into caramel or candy apples when I was a kid and they were around for such a short period of time (especially back then) that they were SO special. One bite of them instantly transports me back to those magical fall days as a kid and into my head pops CARAMEL.
Obviously, I still find the apples super special today. And they will forever be my favorite apple variety. I don’t crave caramel with an apple (I’m much more of an apple + peanut butter girl) but I love the combination once or twice during the season.
Enough about caramel, because that has nothing to do with this recipe. And just how fantastic honeycrisps taste.
But this recipe has evvvvverrrrrything to do with honeycrisps.
SALTED HONEYCRISP FRITTERS?!
Let me start by saying I know what a royal pain it is to fry, well… anything. Especially if you have kids! Lacy and I had this full blown discussion about just.how.good a recipe has to LOOK in order to convince us to fry something.
Well, this is it. The batter is easy. Embarrassingly easy, in fact. You stir in some chopped honeycrisps and then fry in a bit of oil. Remove the fritter, glaze it and shower with flaked sea salt.
Can you even take that?!
If you’re a lover of apples and cheddar then you will freak over this. It’s salty and sweet and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside.
I mean, OMG.
Are fritters more breakfast or dessert?
I couldn’t do them for breakfast because of the carb coma that would come over me. But I could possibly do them for brunch (definitely), a snack and then even as a late night treat. Wowzas.
I’m usually very much team-apple cider doughnut but it’s quite possible that I’m asking to be traded.
Salted Apple Fritters
Salted Honeycrisp Fritters
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
- ⅔ cup milk
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups peeled and chopped apples
- vegetable or canola oil for frying
glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- flaked sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- Heat a few inches of oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. You want the oil to reach about 350 degrees Line a plate with paper towels.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, butter and vanilla. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Stir the chopped apples into the batter.
- Once the oil is hot, drop ¼ cups of batter into the oil, only doing 1 or 2 at a time, and fry until golden on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Be sure to flip the fritter once or twice. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on the paper towel to drain excess grease. Repeat with remaining batter.
- Once the fritters are all finished and slightly cool, dip them in the glaze. Place them on a sheet of parchment paper and immediately sprinkle with flaked salt. Serve!
glaze
- Whisk the sugar, vanilla and milk together until combined and smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add more milk 1 teaspoon at a time until it’s thin enough to dip the fritters.

“To me, honeycrisps taste like caramel apples without the caramel.” You nailed it.
Delicious! Tastes just like a donut!
I was a little scared of frying them, but it was completely fine!
Ugh, I’m so on board with your comment about how good something has to look in order to try a recipe that involves frying. And now you had to go and post these, which look absolutely ridiculously incredible. I’m already dreading the mess I’m going to make later. Buuuut I’m also already drooling over how good they’re going to be. WOW.

These look absolutely amazing!!! Having never fried anything before, what do you do with the oil after frying? Pour it down the drain?
Hi, Sue! I am sure Jessica will chime in…but, please, nooo do not pour oil down a drain. After frying, let the oil cool completely. You can then strain it into a large enough container (we use our HUGE Pyrex measuring bowl) and use the oil again another one for two times or you can strain it into an empty container (usually the one it came in) and dispose of it in the trash (not sure about where you might recycle…maybe another reader can comment.)
you can go on amazon and look for hot oil solidifier. I got some and it works great!!
Apple fritters are my fav kind of doughnut and these look divine and worth the cleanup.
so, I love fritters. Everything about them. But I’ve never made them bc like you said frying things especially with kids have to look suuuuper good before I’ll take the risk of injury, mess, etc. Well these look that good.
Just out of curiosity do you just use your candy thermometer to measure the temp of the oil?
You can bake them in oven. But delicious fried. Did you add honey crisp cereal.?.
love these for a little calorie splurge, fun to make too, especially since they’re a little outside my normal cooking techniques, thank you!
Would these work in an air fryer, you think? Might be worth the frying annoyance if not 😂
the only reason i don’t think they will is because it’s a runny batter and not a dough!

Already had plans to go to the apple orchard today. Now I have to pick up oil and make these. Strangely, my husband loves frying bits of things, so this should be a fun stay-in date night!

First time using an comment about fritters are goid anytime and I hadn’t gift an master fritter on an egg and sausage or ham fritter recipe but my icing is jelly instead of powered sugar. And it is good.. If I come up with an breakfast fritter I send recipe. Any speciality desserts for Thanksgiving?
These look + sound so good, but hate frying indoors. Going to try these on a hot gas grill w/cast iron pan!
Think it should work and almost no clean up or grease smell? Will post how it turns out.
Recipe not found to print, but worth the trouble to write down.😍

Oh my gosh… I’m drooling all over myself. I need to make this recipe SOON!
I’ve never made apple fritters before, and quite honestly, have never been great at frying things. HOWEVER, I tried these over the weekend and WOW they’re so easy (not to mention so so delicious)!!! Thanks for the fantastic recipe!
Apple fritters are quite possibly my favorite food and now after seeing these I’m going to have to make them!

These were so easy to make despite having to fry them. They came together very quickly and the frying was rather quick, as well. So yummy. I brought them to my coworkers and they devoured them!
How long can I make them ahead of time. Could I make them a day before an event?
I would LOVE to try these in my Air Fryer?!! Any tips would be appreciated!!!
Tried these tonight Easy to make Turned out great recipe can make around 15 fritters if you use less batter per fritter They were a big hit with kids
Thank you for sharing this recipe. I made them last night for dessert and they tasted great. We eat plant-based in our house so I replaced the eggs with 2 very ripe bananas (almond milk and plant-based butter subs too) and used a cast iron skillet on the grill to heat up the oil. The smell of frying oil that lingers in the house is too much for me, so outside on the grill is the only option for frying here. :) Happy fall!

I have a HUGE sweet tooth and I have never had an apple fritter before. I can barely contain the excitement I have to make this.
:( they went soggy within minutes. whyyyyy. Is it because I scaled the apples by weight instead of by cup? Is it because some of my apples were a little on the soft side and released too much juice?
or maybe because I checked the temperature of the oil using a laser thermometer?
Hi! First of all, these are delicious!! But I’m having a problem that I don’t think there’s a solution for; they’re getting soggy. The first time I made these I thought it was because I put them in a container too quickly before they cooled completely. So then I just made them again this afternoon and they’ve been sitting out for several hours and they’re soggy agin. It dawned on me that salt draws out the moisture in food so I think it’s the finishing salt that’s making it soggy. My only way to fix it I would think is to only ice and salt the ones you’re about to eat. Have you encountered this problem? I’d love your thoughts!
Do you think the fritters will come out the same if I use almond milk and flax egg instead of regular eggs? I’m going for a vegan version.
i really can’t say for sure since i haven’t tested them that way. i def think the almond milk would be fine – the flax egg is what i’m not quite sure of! let me know if you try!
These look SO incredible Jessica! I can’t even wait to try them. You’re so good at what you do!!
While these were delicious fresh, curious how you store them? By the next morning they were soggy and pretty much inedible, definitely can’t eat 15 fritters in one night. Any tips would be great because I’d definitely make again if they can be stored for the next couple days!
These are the best apple fritters i have ever tasted!! I dont think the Honeycrisp was around beyond the past few years, so maybe a different variety as a kid??
Hi, I made these a while ago and had a problem with them being crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I followed the directions and ended up having to put them in the oven at 350 for about 10 minutes to get them where they should be. Also, I recommend glazing them before consumption, because mine did get soggy.
Overall the recipe was good, just wanted to share my experience with you to see if I was doing something wrong. 🤷♀️
Great recipe.
These look amazingingly delicious! Could you cook these in the air fryer instead?
these ones can’t be done in the air fryer – the batter is too wet!
I just got through making these, put the icing on and sprinkle the sea salt. I ate the first one to get cool enough to eat. They are delicious. So full of apples. I went right by the recipe. I will cook them often.
